Day 20 - Roof framing!
Day 20 - roof framed - on to sheathing, the parapet and then she’s fully framed! And only a single day of rain, nuts!
Building is a meditation (of sorts)
A twist here, a crank there. This build we’ve been using clamps, site-built jigs and framing screws to create tight joints and seams prior to nailing. A slower pace is keeping us more square, level and plumb and should help us better air-seal the house.
People have commented on our “lack” of headers but we’re actually using a continuous rim-joist header per 2015/2018 IRC R602.7.2 . This method coupled with a 24” on center stud layout greatly reduces the amount of wood required for framing. The material cost savings are minor but our Passive House calculations show this will seriously reduce thermal bridging through framing.
Flat roof framing
Our roof is “flat” and will require additional detailing once the structural roof sheathing is installed. Stay tuned for more photos and details.
