I receive emails almost daily from people curious about building costs. As you might expect, costs vary wildly from place to place. Here’s an example: The average square foot cost to have a home built in the US in 2019 was somewhere between $150-160 per square foot. However, these costs run substantially higher, like $175-350 per square foot, if you live anywhere on the West Coast from California to Washington state. In my peninsular town building costs generally start around $200 per square foot, e.g. though you might be able to squeak by on a contractor-grade build, which I do not recommend, for around $175 per square foot.

Robuilt shows one of the most balanced approaches to tackling a new building project. He did a contractor build and filled in with some DIY wherever he thought he could do the work. In the end he got a handsome tiny house built in Los Angeles for $72,000. He designed the Jacaranda with THE small HOUSE CATALOG as well as similar expanded version called the Conejito, which can be purchased here.

Check out some of Robuilt’s ither creative videos if you’re into learning some DIY techniques.
